The voluntary, non-profit organization Reading to the Others is a group of volunteers whose aim is to read for people unable to do so on their own.

Those are people with sight problems, blind or aged people who cannot hold a book in their hands, elderly people in hospices, children in child care institutions or illiterate imprisoned individuals.

Driven by our motto “so that they can listen through our eyes and read through our voice” and motivated by the belief that everybody is entitled to equal access to literature, the volunteers participating in Reading to the Others carry out live reading sessions to a growing number of institutions in Athens, Heraklion and Chania in Crete, and Thessaloniki in Northern Greece.

At the same time, our volunteers read and record books and works of literature in order to enrich the Audio Library for the Blind.

Reading to the Others was legally authorized as Non Profit Organization (NPO in July 2015.

The birth of this initiative

Argyro Spiridaki was the person who initially conceived the idea to create the voluntary organization Reading to the Others. While talking with her blind friend Thodoris about books they had both read, Argiro realized how limited the available titles of audio books are in Greece compared to the international literary production.

Thus she decided to persuade volunteers to take time recording audio books in recording studios. The target was to use these audio books in order to grow bigger the Audio Library for the Blind.

At first, Argiro shared her idea on Facebook. The immediate response of the public lead to a first meeting about month later, in January 2015. The volunteers that showed up in this meeting created the first core of our voluntary organization.

Ever since, our organization is growing substantially and in a touching way. So far more than 3,000 people have been registered as volunteers, while our organization spreads actively in four Greek cities: Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Chania.

In order to meet up, once every two months there is a meeting of volunteers and an open call for discussion of new projects concerning the future of our NPO.
